Nothing can compare to the luminosity of transparent watercolor. The works I create using this medium are often small, but the color is rich. The unique freshness and immediacy of watercolor appeals to me as well as the constant challenge to paint with verve. Gouache (pronounced gwaäsh) is often called opaque watercolor, but the medium offers a full range of application from transparent to opaque. Noted for the lovely velvety mat paint quality, it adapts well for either still life or creating luminous landscapes. I often pack a palette with fresh paint to head out for some plein air painting. The quick drying time means I can get several studies done when there are time constraints. |
